STEERING SYSTEM

STEERING SYSTEM

The steering system functions to regulate the direction of the vehicle by way of turning the front wheel. When the steering wheel is rotated, the steering column
continue the rotation to the steering gear. This steering gear enlarges the turning moment, resulting in greater power for
move the front wheel through steering links (steering linkage).

There are two steering system models commonly used in cars, namely the recirculating ball model

STEERING SYSTEM

Steering column

The steering column consists of a main shaft that continues the rotation
the steering wheel to the steering gear, and the binding steering column
play shaft to the body. The upper end of the main shaft is made tapered and
toothed.

At this end the steering wheel is tied with a nut
Parts of the steering column are shown at images below:

2. Steering gear

The steering gear besides functioning directs the front wheel, too
serves as a reduction gear to enlarge the moment
the steering wheel becomes light and disturbances to the wheels do not
directly felt by the driver.

There are several types of steering gears, but what is widely used today is the type of recirculating ball

Pinion

STEERING SYSTEM

The type of recirculating ball is used on
medium to large passenger cars and commercial cars
whereas rack and pinion types are used in small to medium size passenger cars.
steering linkage

Even though the car moves up and down, the steering wheel movement must be able to be passed to the wheel very accurately (at all times), so that steering connections are needed (steering linkage).

Power steering

The power steering system is planned to reduce driving power when the car moves at low speed and adjusts to a certain level when the vehicle moves starting speed
medium to high speed.

In the power steering system there is
hydraulic boss placed in the center of the steering mechanism.

vane pump that generates hydraulic power, a gear box containing a control valve, power pinton, and steer gear (recirculating balt type).

fluid drain pipes and flexible hoses.
Power saving rack and pinion models
This power steering model is the same as the integral model, but the control valve is included in the gear housing and the power piston is separate in the power cylinder.
